HOW TO: DB Split Squat

Do you suffer from knee troubles or tight hips? Do you want to improve the depth and quality of your squats?

If you answered “yes” then you should be Split Squatting.

I frequently program this exercise as an accessory for squats. It’s great for opening up the hips and preparing the joints to help you squat deeper.

Elevating the front foot shortens the range of motion which allows for greater depth, takes the load off the lower back, strengthens the knee, stretches the hip flexors and works the quads, adductors, glutes and hamstrings. It’s a great starting point for beginners, and even intermediate to advanced lifters with poor flexibility and lower back or knee problems.

Make sure you tuck the hips under and lean the torso back throughout the movement, and allow the lunging knee to go right over the toes. The aim is get your hamstring to cover your calf. If you feel an intense stretch through the hip flexors you’re doing it right.
